### Water-Bath Retort Operation and Maintenance Guidelines

#### **Operator Responsibilities**

1. **Training and Compliance**:

- Operators must be trained, pass qualification tests, and strictly follow safety procedures and job responsibilities.

- Any abnormalities during operation must be addressed immediately.

2. **Regular Inspections**:

- Conduct external inspections every six months and comprehensive inspections annually.

- Follow regulatory requirements for inspections and archive all inspection reports.

#### **Operational and Safety Requirements**

1. **Pressure and Temperature Limits**:

- Do not operate the retort above its design pressure or temperature.

2. **Safety Accessories**:

- Ensure pressure gauges, thermometers, and safety valves are functional and regularly calibrated.

- Safety valve trip pressure must match the design pressure.

- Replace faulty pressure gauges or thermometers immediately if:

- Scales are unclear, or the pointer doesn’t return to zero.

- Mercury columns are broken or show deviations greater than 0.5°C.

3. **Sealing and Lubrication**:

- Replace worn or damaged flange sealing rings promptly.

- Apply grease to sliding and rolling contact areas (e.g., wedges, rollers) to maintain smooth operation.

4. **Storage and Maintenance**:

- Clean the retort and its lid thoroughly when not in use.

- Apply anti-rust paint to exposed surfaces and protect instruments with covers.
